USAID’s Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation (DDI) ‘s Center for Economics and Market Development (EMD) tasked the Learning, Evaluation, and Analysis Project III (LEAP III) team with a unique challenge to design and deliver a virtual Economic Growth (EG) Course. This innovative course was held over two weeks in February and March 2021, marking a significant shift from the traditional in-person format. The course objectives included:
- Orient participants on foreign policy objectives and interests and USAID policy frameworks relative to promoting economic development.
- Operationalize USAID’s new Economic Growth Policy.
- Equip participants with advice on micro- and macro-economic development concepts and analysis.
- Increase participants’ technical capacity and skills to impact USAID’s economic growth programs positively.
- Provide an overview of the latest evidence on economic growth.
The team’s commitment to continuous improvement was evident throughout the course. The team set up the meeting platform, utilizing Google Meet for its interactive features, such as breakout rooms and polling. The course ran from February 22 to March 4, 2021, with the team providing facilitation, technical, and logistical support on the day. Recordings of each day’s training were saved and shared with USAID. Finally, the team submitted an after-action report summarizing course rollout, participant feedback, and recommendations for future iterations.
